What is a carbon brush, and what does it do?
(Also known as a "motor brush")
A carbon brush is a sliding contact that transmits electrical current from a stationary to a revolving portion of a motor or generator, ensuring spark-free commutation in DC devices.
A carbon brush could be made up of one or more carbon blocks, and it can also have one or even more shunts and terminals.
The lifetime of the carbon brush is determined by how frequently the motor is used and how much power is applied to it.
Based on the production techniques, grades of carbons, and other elements, carbon brush grades are divided into four categories. Carbon graphite, electro graphite, graphite, and metal graphite are the different types of brushes.
Designs for Carbon Brushes:
- Solid-one-piece carbon brushes: Solid brushes are the most basic sort of brush, applied on machines that have little or no electrical or mechanical considerations.
- Brushes for fractional horsepower (HP): Due to associated spring used to load the carbon in the brush holder, these carbon brushes are also known as "spring-loaded" brushes. The majority of these applications are single-piece; however, FHP brushes can be divided.
- Split Carbon Brushes: Split brushes are made by combining two, three, or more carbon sectors into a single unit, leading to enhanced electrical and mechanical contact possible. The brush can be split to provide for additional electrical points of contact between the brush surface and the Commutator, as well as equally distributed pressure.
